Introducing CompoundLookup: Search Chemistry Like Never Before
We're launching the world's first tool to search chemical compounds by selecting elements. Here's our story.
A Tool That Should Have Existed
We built CompoundLookup because we were frustrated. As students and chemistry enthusiasts, we constantly wanted to answer simple questions:
- What compounds can Carbon and Nitrogen form?
- Are there any compounds with just Iron and Oxygen?
- What molecules contain Hydrogen, Carbon, and Sulfur?
We searched for tools to answer these questions. We found none. Every chemistry database—PubChem, ChemSpider, NIST, you name it—requires you to know the exact molecular formula. But that's the whole problem: we wanted to discover formulas, not search for ones we already knew.
Building the Impossible
The reason this tool didn't exist isn't lack of demand—it's technical complexity. To enable element-based search, we needed to:
- Parse millions of molecular formulas - Extract elements from strings like "C₆H₁₂O₆"
- Create efficient indexes - Enable fast lookups for any element combination
- Handle edge cases - Complex formulas, ions, isotopes, and more
- Build intuitive UI - Make the periodic table clickable and responsive
We spent months solving these challenges. The result is CompoundLookup.
What You Can Do Now
- Select any elements from our interactive periodic table
- Instantly see all compounds containing those elements
- Browse thousands of results with detailed information
- Link directly to PubChem for complete data
